Each participant will be photographed (or have the subject of their desire photographed at WAL*ART) and go through the process of turning a digital photograph into a high-contrast black and white printmaster.

From the master image, you will be instructed on how to cut a stencil or plate, mount it and pull 12 prints from the screen that will serve as the basis for your series. From there, students are shown a variety of techniques to paint, collage, spray and augment the original images.

Comprehensive Photo Encaustic: March 20-21

Have you ever seen a photograph layered with wax? Have you ever wanted to have everything at your fingertips to explore the conjunction of these two media? This exciting new class is the brainchild of 20 years combined experience of Jamie Beardsley and Eve-Marie Bergren in photography and encaustic, and provides a giant playground of possibilities for the emerging artist.
The potential of combining digital photography and the ancient technique of encaustic painting yields beautiful and ethereal images. By combining photography and encaustic, the artist transcends the boundaries of printmaking because each repetition of an image becomes unique. Photography, which draws on the left brain sensibility of controlled outcome, combined with encaustic, an accidental and sometimes uncontrollable media together create an interesting tension. In this three day course, we will introduce various techniques that push the boundaries of the cutting edge technology in combination with wax. We will be working with alternative cyanotypes, various transfer techniques & digital negatives in new ways, at the same time having full access to Photoshop digital manipulation and Epson Fine Art printers on silk and watercolor paper at the WAL*ART studios. We will additionally show uses of oil sticks, encaustic medium and creating dimensional space in wax by pouring and brushing. The possibilities are unlimited. This workshop is recommended for individuals with a confident working photographic or encaustic background.

Instructor Eve-Marie Bergren taught for R & F Handmade Paints for 9 years at various art centers around the country. Her focus is encaustic and photography in installation with an emphasis on identity and community.
